Ted Cruz Urges Trump to Arm Iranian Protesters

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz is urging President Donald Trump and the government of Israel to provide weapons to anti-government protesters in Iran to facilitate the collapse of the clerical regime. Speaking on the School of War podcast, Cruz argued that arming domestic opposition would allow Iranians to overthrow their own government without requiring American boots on the ground.

This proposal comes six months into a conflict launched by the Trump administration on February 28, which has included U.S. and Israeli air operations, a naval blockade of Iranian harbors, and the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Despite these actions, the conflict has failed to produce a lasting ceasefire and has severely disrupted the Strait of Hormuz, a shipping lane carrying 20 percent of the world's oil supply.

The push for regime change highlights a rift within the Republican Party. Cruz, along with Senators Bill Cassidy and Tom Cotton, condemned a June memorandum of understanding as a disaster and advocated for continued military strikes. Conversely, Vice President JD Vance has defended the administration's diplomatic strategy, arguing that negotiation is necessary to secure shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

While Cruz advocates for arming protesters, reports indicate a lack of current mass demonstrations following a brutal January crackdown that allegedly left over 30,000 civilians dead. Human rights monitors also report the execution of 457 people in Iran this year.
