UK Government Launches Welfare Overhaul to Boost Youth Employment

Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden announced a planned overhaul of the United Kingdom's welfare system, describing the effort to move young people from disability benefits into employment as a "moral crusade." The initiative targets a sharp rise in disability benefit claims among young people, particularly those linked to autism and ADHD, with working-age disability spending forecast to reach £34bn by 2030.

The government is preparing to renew the welfare state following two autumn reviews: one on young people by Alan Milburn and another on disability benefits by the Timms panel. Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated he will change the system in a "Labour way" to prioritize employment over simple cost-saving, following a previous government U-turn on £5bn in disability benefit cuts.

Proposed reforms may include new legislation for benefit assessments and the adoption of borrowing models from Denmark and the Netherlands to better support youth employment. McFadden emphasized the urgency of the change, noting that young people left out of work are more likely to die prematurely than their peers.
