Trump Administration Revokes Millions in Federal Bike Lane Grants

The Donald Trump administration is restricting the expansion of bicycle infrastructure across the United States by revoking federal grants for projects it labels as DEI bike lanes. The U.S. Department of Transportation has characterized cycling as part of a phony climate agenda, leading to the cancellation of an $11.7 million grant for a path in Fairfield, Alabama, and the freezing of a $9.3 million grant for the East Nashville Spokes project in Tennessee.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has argued that bike lanes increase traffic congestion and waste fuel. He has urged senators to restrict future funding for such projects and support the removal of existing lanes. In Washington, D.C., the administration attempted to remove the 15th Street bike lane, though Judge Amy Berman Jackson temporarily blocked the demolition in April.

These actions mark a shift from previous bipartisan support for cycling. While the administration frames the issue as a political cause, current data indicates majority support for bike lanes among Americans, including many Republicans.
