Jeffries Leads Push for Non-Waivable Russia Sanctions
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries announced a bipartisan effort to create non-waivable Russia sanctions after President Donald Trump waived existing penalties.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries campaigned for Representative Marcy Kaptur in Ohio on Sunday, where he announced a planned bipartisan effort in the House to develop a new sanctions package against Russia. The initiative aims to create penalties that the president cannot waive, a direct response to President Donald Trump's recent decision to waive sanctions that were part of a bill named for Lindsey Graham signed into law last month.
Jeffries and Kaptur condemned the president's action, with Jeffries stating that the waiver undermines democracy and dignity for the Ukrainian people. Kaptur, who co-chairs the Congressional Ukraine Caucus, characterized the move as un-American. Despite the controversy, Jeffries asserted that the election climate remains strong for Democrats as they approach the November 3 midterms.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson noted that some Republican colleagues have raised concerns regarding the unintended consequences of the waiver. However, Johnson stated he had not yet discussed the matter with the president.
