Donald Trump Claims Chicago Violence Reaches Record Levels

President Donald Trump claimed on Truth Social that violence in Chicago has never been worse following a weekend where at least 41 people were shot and three were killed, including a mass shooting in Washington Park. Trump urged Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker to request federal assistance, warning that the city would die without such support.

Democratic leaders in Illinois rejected the president's assertions. Governor JB Pritzker accused the administration of gutting gun violence prevention funding, while Mayor Brandon Johnson argued that the administration is defunding safety operations to invest in illegal wars. Johnson stated that the president has an open invitation to invest in the people of Chicago.

Data from the Chicago Police Department contradicts the claim that violence is at record levels. While murders rose 4% through August 23 compared to 2025, overall violent crime complaints fell by approximately 10% year-over-year. These figures remain significantly lower than the peaks recorded between 2022 and 2024.
