Andy Burnham Proposes Public Debate on EU Freedom of Movement
Prime Minister Andy Burnham called for an honest discussion on returning to EU freedom of movement, sparking backlash from Reform UK and Conservative critics.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has called for an honest discussion with the British public regarding a potential return to freedom of movement between the United Kingdom and the European Union. In interviews with the Sunday Times, Burnham outlined several options for a new relationship with the bloc, including joining the customs union, the single market, or pursuing full EU membership.
Burnham argued that the nature of migration has changed since the 2016 Brexit referendum, characterizing previous patterns as revolving door migration. While he is scheduled to present these options to the public ahead of a November 20 summit with EU leaders in Brussels, he explicitly ruled out recommending that the UK adopt the euro or join the Schengen Area.
The proposal drew immediate condemnation from political opponents. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage described the move as a total betrayal of Brexit voters, while Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp asserted that the British people voted to end free movement and that there can be no return to it.
