Iran Reviews Peace Proposals Amid Tanker Attacks in Hormuz

Iran is reviewing Qatari-led peace proposals to end its war with the United States as maritime attacks continue in the Strait of Hormuz.

Three tankers were damaged by naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz on November 5, escalating maritime tensions in the Gulf. The attacks occur as Iran reviews concrete proposals presented by Qatari mediators to resolve the status of its nuclear program and end its conflict with the United States.

Diplomatic efforts, spearheaded by the Government of Qatar through talks in Tehran, Doha, and Armenia, aim to prevent full-scale military escalation. Vice President JD Vance has emerged as a key proponent of these talks, proposing direct negotiations to Mohsen Rezaei. However, significant obstacles remain, including a U.S. demand for the removal of Iran's highly enriched uranium stockpile and Iranian demands for the lifting of oil sanctions and a naval blockade.

In the United States, the conflict has become a political flashpoint following midterm elections in which Republicans lost control of Congress. While JD Vance attributed the defeat to the war in the Gulf, President Donald Trump defended the military action as necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Despite this, Trump has acknowledged that diplomacy may be viable. Conversely, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has rejected any submission to the United States, and Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has criticized the U.S. administration's approach.
