Russia Stockpiles 6,200 Drones and Deploys High-Speed Jet Models

The Federal Government of Russia has accumulated a stockpile of approximately 6,200 Geran kamikaze drones to facilitate large-scale attacks against Ukraine. According to Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR), Moscow builds these reserves to compensate for limited production capacity, allowing for intensive strikes of 600 to 1,000 drones in a single wave. Russia has already set records this year, deploying between 6,000 and 6,500 unmanned aerial vehicles in some months to overwhelm air defenses.

Russia has recently shifted its tactics by increasing the deployment of jet-powered drones, including the Geran-3, Geran-4, and the cruise-missile-like Geran-5. These aircraft can reach speeds of 375 mph, making them significantly harder to intercept than propeller-driven models. Some recent bombardments have consisted of up to two-thirds jet-powered drones. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that one such drone recently struck a passenger train in the Odesa region, killing at least two people.

In response to improved Russian drone maneuverability, Ukrainian defense firms are accelerating the development of faster interceptors. The company Skyfall is scheduled to begin mass production of the P1-Sun JetKiller in August 2026, following successful tests where the system downed over a dozen jet-powered threats.
