Donald Trump Berates CNN Reporter During Oval Office Event

President Donald Trump and the White House launched personal attacks against CNN correspondent Kristen Holmes after she questioned him on foreign policy and presidential duties.

President Donald Trump verbally attacked CNN senior White House correspondent Kristen Holmes during an Oval Office event on August 17, 2026. The event, which honored lifeguard Ryder Williams and 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai, devolved into a confrontation when Holmes questioned Trump regarding claims by Senator Jon Ossoff that the president prioritized a White House ballroom and travel with aide Natalie Harp over his official duties. Trump dismissed Ossoff as a "Pee-wee Herman look-alike."

The clash escalated when Holmes asked if North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had requested a reduction in joint military exercises with South Korea. Trump repeatedly ordered Holmes to "be quiet," calling her a "fake reporter," a "loud, boisterous person," and "very disrespectful" in front of the children. During the exchange, Trump defended his relationship with Kim Jong Un and dismissed CNN reporting on food shortages aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln as "fake news."

Following the event, the White House rapid response team and Communications Director Steven Cheung targeted Holmes on social media. The rapid response account called her a "disgraceful, humiliating embarrassment to her alleged profession" and claimed her children would be "sickened and embarrassed" by her "disgusting and inhumane question." CNN issued a formal statement defending Holmes as one of the most respected journalists covering the White House, asserting that personal attacks on reporters are "beneath the office and inconsistent with the principles of a free press."
