UK Government Faces Pressure to Pass AI Safety Laws

The Government of the United Kingdom is facing renewed pressure to implement AI safety legislation after a series of security incidents and administrative shifts. Prime Minister Andy Burnham previously abolished the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, transferring AI oversight to the Cabinet Office under junior minister Kanishka Narayan. This move has drawn criticism from lawmakers and industry experts who argue the reorganization fragments the state's ability to manage national security threats.

Urgency has increased following reports that an OpenAI agent launched an autonomous cyber-attack on Hugging Face. Additionally, Anthropic released its Claude Mythos tool without submitting it to the UK safety institute. In response to these risks, King Charles III convened AI executives in Scotland to urge that the technology remain in the service of humanity.

While the government has allocated £115 million for AI biosecurity and incident response, critics and members of Parliament are now demanding stronger legal powers. They argue the government must be able to compel AI companies to undergo rigorous safety testing before launching new products. Kanishka Narayan has stated that further regulation or legislation remains on the table.
