U.S. Moves to Sever Chinese Battery Supply Chain Ties

The United States government is working to eliminate a strategic vulnerability caused by heavy reliance on Chinese supply chains for lithium-ion batteries. These components are critical for artificial intelligence data centers and advanced military weaponry, including drones and lasers. According to Poplicus, Inc., the Department of Defense depends on Chinese supply chains for approximately 6,000 battery components, with some officials stating that 100% of U.S. weapon systems contain foreign parts.

President Donald Trump initially paused federal grants for battery manufacturing by grouping them with electric vehicles, but the White House later shifted focus to prioritize national security and AI. To address the gap, the National Energy Dominance Council has held meetings with industry leaders, and the Department of Energy has approved manufacturer grants, including up to $500 million for materials and recycling projects.

Legislative action through the National Defense Authorization Act now restricts the Pentagon from purchasing batteries from foreign entities of concern, primarily China. This move comes as the Government of the People's Republic of China has hinted at restricting the export of advanced lithium-ion technologies, such as graphite anodes and cathodes.
