Carney and Smith Declare Pacific Link Pipeline Public Interest

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Danielle Smith designated the Pacific Link pipeline a major project to streamline construction ahead of Alberta's separation referendum.

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Danielle Smith announced in Fort McMurray that the Pacific Link pipeline has been declared a major project in the public interest. The designation streamlines consultation processes and timelines, which may allow construction to begin within a year to transport Alberta oil to the British Columbia coast.

Mayor Sandy Bowman described the move as evidence that big things happen when provincial and federal governments work in the same direction. The announcement occurs shortly before an October 19 referendum in Alberta to determine if the province should remain in Canada or hold a second, binding vote on separation.

Separatist leaders rejected the announcement, arguing the project fails to address systemic issues. Organizers from Pathway to Independence, Let Alberta Decide, and Stay Free Alberta claimed the province should leave Confederation to retain all resulting revenues rather than sharing them with Ottawa or other provinces.
