Ron DeSantis Launches 2028 Bid After GOP Midterm Losses

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis began a national campaign for the 2028 presidency, framing national Republican midterm losses as a rejection of the party's Washington leadership.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis launched a national rollout for a 2028 presidential bid following the 2026 midterm elections. In a post-election review, DeSantis described the national Republican losses as a "meteor strike" and an "extinction level event" for a segment of the party. He attributed the defeat to voter frustration with Donald Trump and a lack of productivity from Republicans in Washington, arguing that Democrats did not earn a mandate for "left-wing fantasies."

While Democrats reclaimed both chambers of Congress and made gains in Texas, Republicans maintained control of major statewide offices in Florida. Democratic strategist James Carville identified DeSantis as the "Republican winner" of the cycle, noting Florida served as a firewall against the Democratic wave. However, the GOP lost its supermajority in the Florida House of Representatives, a result DeSantis blamed on former Speaker Daniel Perez. In a historic shift, Representative Byron Donalds was elected as the first Black governor of Florida to succeed the term-limited DeSantis.

DeSantis's presidential positioning sets up a primary conflict with JD Vance for the 2028 nomination. DeSantis is supported by the Club for Growth and Israel-aligned influencers, while Vance is backed by Turning Point USA and tech-focused networks. Former President Donald Trump reportedly held a press pool during DeSantis's speech to divert media attention and support Vance.
