Mark Zuckerberg Urges US to Accelerate Open AI Development

Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg is urging the United States government to accelerate artificial intelligence development and reject restrictive regulations. In a New York Times interview and a Wall Street Journal opinion column, Zuckerberg argued that current industry discourse is overwhelmingly focused on existential risks and doom, suggesting that optimism should be the default assumption.

Zuckerberg advocated for the democratization of technology, specifically the creation of personalized superintelligence available to individuals rather than a few institutions. He criticized proposals to ban open-source AI models from China, arguing that the U.S. should instead maintain global leadership by building superior systems. Additionally, he cautioned against the Trump administration's proposed 30-day review period for new models, stating such delays are significant in a fast-moving field.

These views contrast with those of competitors like Anthropic and OpenAI. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei highlighted alignment risks and the need to prevent powerful chips from reaching authoritarian regimes. While OpenAI expressed support for open-source software and is collaborating with the White House on safety, its leadership has warned of existential risks and mass job displacement. Recently, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman traveled to Washington to present their perspectives to the Trump administration, with Huang issuing an open letter supporting open software development.
