Trump Freezes National Childcare Funding Amid Minnesota Fraud Probe

President Donald Trump froze federal childcare funding nationwide and launched denaturalization reviews for Somali immigrants following allegations of systemic social services fraud in Minnesota.

The administration of Donald Trump froze federal childcare funding for all 50 states and initiated a crackdown on Somali immigrants in Minnesota following allegations of industrial-scale fraud. The action was triggered by a viral video from conservative influencer Nick Shirley alleging that Somali-run daycare centers in Minneapolis were receiving millions in taxpayer funds while remaining non-operational. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Deputy Secretary Jim O'Neill activated a "Defend the Spend" system, requiring states to provide justification, receipts, or photo evidence before federal Child Care and Development Fund payments are released. Minnesota's annual funding of approximately $185 million was specifically frozen, with a January 9 deadline for the state to provide detailed verification data.

Beyond childcare, federal prosecutors estimate that welfare fraud in Minnesota since 2018 may have cost taxpayers up to $18 billion, including a $250 million scam by the nonprofit Feeding Our Future. In response, President Trump terminated Temporary Protected Status for Somalis in Minnesota and ordered audits of naturalization cases to identify fraudulent citizens for denaturalization and deportation. FBI Director Kash Patel and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem surged federal agents into the Twin Cities to dismantle fraud rings and investigate potential links to the terrorist group al-Shabaab.

Governor Tim Walz condemned the funding freeze and immigration crackdown as a politicized effort to defund state programs, asserting that state inspectors found no fraud at the specific centers flagged by Shirley. Conversely, Republican lawmakers, including Representative Tom Emmer and House Speaker Lisa Demuth, demanded Walz's resignation, alleging his administration ignored whistleblower warnings for years. To further combat abuse, HHS rescinded Biden-era regulations that allowed for enrollment-based upfront payments, reinstating attendance-based billing nationwide.
