Lebanese Christian Villages Reject Netanyahu Annexation Claims

Christian border towns in southern Lebanon denied claims by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that they sought annexation by Israel for protection from Hezbollah.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed in interviews with Fox News on July 5 and 6 that several Christian villages in southern Lebanon requested annexation and Israeli citizenship to escape "Hezbollah fanatics who want to kill them." Netanyahu asserted that Israel protects these communities and that his military will remain in southern Lebanon "as long as necessary" to secure northern Israel.

Fifteen Christian border towns issued a joint statement rejecting these assertions and reaffirming their commitment to Lebanese sovereignty and national identity. Hanna Al-Amil, the mayor of Rmeish, described the claims as "completely false" and "absolutely unthinkable," arguing that Netanyahu is exploiting the suffering of residents for political agendas. Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri also condemned the remarks as political misinformation designed to sow division.

The dispute unfolds as Israeli forces maintain a ground presence in southern Lebanon, continuing operations to remove threats following a conflict that escalated after the February 28 death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayotollah Ali Khamenei. While military chief Eyal Zamir stated the army would continue to operate decisively, Lebanese authorities report that Israeli offensives since March 2 have killed at least 4,303 people and displaced more than one million individuals.
