UAE Exits OPEC to Boost Oil Production Capacity

The United Arab Emirates withdrew from OPEC and OPEC+ effective May 1, 2026, to expand production capacity and align with U.S. energy strategies.

The United Arab Emirates formally withdrew from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the OPEC+ alliance on May 1, 2026. The decision followed a comprehensive review of national energy strategies and a desire to bypass production quotas that limited output to roughly 3.5 million barrels per day. Abu Dhabi aims to increase its production capacity to 5 million barrels per day by 2027, seeking to monetize its reserves before a projected long-term decline in fossil fuel demand.

The exit occurs amid extreme regional instability triggered by a February 2026 U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, which resulted in the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz. While the blockade initially muted the market impact of the withdrawal, analysts expect the UAE's increased output to exert downward pressure on oil prices once maritime flows are restored. The move is viewed as a strategic alignment with U.S. President Donald Trump, who welcomed the departure as a means to lower global fuel costs.

Geopolitically, the withdrawal signals a deepening rift between the UAE and Saudi Arabia over regional leadership and conflicting agendas in Yemen and Sudan. UAE officials also criticized the Gulf Cooperation Council's response to Iranian attacks as the "weakest in history." To secure its financial position, the UAE negotiated a dollar swap line with the U.S. Treasury. Despite the exit, Energy Minister Suhail Al Mazrouei stated the UAE would remain a "responsible producer" and continue to work with other nations.
