EU Weighs Sanctions After Russian Drone Attack in Germany

The European Union is considering new restrictions on Russian travel and fuel tankers following a failed drone attack at an airport in Leipzig, Germany. The airport serves as a critical hub for transporting military equipment to Ukraine. European leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, characterized the incident as part of an escalation of Russian hybrid attacks on EU soil.

In immediate response, the Federal Government of Germany announced it will close the Russian consulate in Bonn and a Russian cultural center in Berlin. Germany is also tightening border controls for Russian nationals. EU envoys are scheduled to meet to discuss limiting tourist visas, constraining Russian diplomats, and sanctioning the shadow fleet of vessels used to move Russian oil.

Beyond these immediate measures, the EU is developing its largest sanctions package to date. This proposed package targets approximately 1,600 individuals and entities. Ursula von der Leyen stated that such hybrid attacks have become the "new normal" for Europeans, while Micheal Martin asserted that Moscow is becoming more reckless within the EU.
