Mykhailo Fedorov Calls for Wartime Elections in Ukraine

Former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov urged Ukraine to establish a legal mechanism for wartime elections to address a systemic crisis of governance.

Mykhailo Fedorov, the former Defense Minister of Ukraine, called for the establishment of wartime elections on Tuesday, challenging the current governance of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In a video statement, Fedorov argued that democracy cannot be "held hostage by Russia" and urged the government to find a legal, safe, and realistic mechanism to renew democratic processes despite the ongoing conflict.

Fedorov was dismissed from his post in July during a government reshuffle. He claimed that Ukraine is currently facing a "systemic crisis of governance" and criticized official corruption within the administration. His call for elections comes at a time when current Ukrainian law prohibits voting during wartime.

The demand for democratic renewal coincides with President Zelenskyy moving to appoint Yevhen Khmara as the new defense minister, a nomination that formally concludes Fedorov's tenure in the role.
