Indian Political Leaders Issue Nationwide Diwali Greetings

Government leaders and political figures across India issued public greetings for Diwali, emphasizing themes of peace, social justice, and the triumph of light over darkness.

Prominent political leaders and government officials across India issued public greetings for the Diwali festival on November 8, 2026. The celebrations, which began with Dhanteras on November 6 and culminated with Lakshmi Puja, were marked by calls for national harmony and prosperity.

In Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and Governor Rajendra Vishwnath conveyed wishes to residents. Vijay's public greeting was noted as a departure from the tradition of his predecessor, M K Stalin, who did not greet the public for Deepavali during his tenure. Similarly, leaders in Nagaland, including Governor Nand Kishore Yadav and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, extended wishes to the Hindu community, focusing on the triumph of light over darkness.

Other high-ranking officials joined the celebrations, with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath referencing the return of Lord Shri Ram to Ayodhya as an inspiration for public welfare. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also issued messages of hope and joy. From the opposition, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi used the occasion to call for the removal of injustice, ignorance, and discrimination from society.

In Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed hope that the festival would strengthen bonds of togetherness and goodwill across the region.
