Blahous Study Names Trump Top Contributor to Federal Deficit
Charles Blahous reports that President Donald Trump is now the largest individual contributor to the U.S. fiscal imbalance due to extensive tax cuts.
Senior research strategist Charles Blahous released an updated analysis in October 2026 identifying the primary drivers of the United States federal fiscal imbalance. The study finds that the long-term debt problem is largely fueled by spending growth in Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and Affordable Care Act subsidies, alongside significant tax cuts.
Blahous identifies two critical periods of fiscal irresponsibility—1965 to 1972 and 2010 to the present—which together account for between 85% and 87% of the current shortfall. While mandatory spending has historically been the primary driver, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025 shifted the balance, with tax cuts now accounting for roughly 25% to 30% of the total deficit.
The analysis concludes that President Donald Trump has surpassed Lyndon B. Johnson as the largest individual contributor to the fiscal imbalance due to tax cuts enacted during his two terms. Blahous asserts that neither major political party has a compelling claim to superior fiscal responsibility and argues that stability requires moderating mandatory spending and ending tax cuts that lack spending restraints.
