Tom Homan Announces Record ICE Agent Surge into New York City
Border Czar Tom Homan plans an unprecedented surge of ICE agents into New York City following Governor Kathy Hochul's restrictions on federal immigration enforcement.
White House Border Czar Tom Homan announced a plan to deploy a record number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents into New York City's five boroughs. Homan stated he has reviewed the operational plan, describing the surge as a direct response to legislation signed by Governor Kathy Hochul that curbs ICE operations. The laws prohibit state and local officers from engaging in civil immigration enforcement, ban agents from wearing masks, and restrict federal access to schools, hospitals, and houses of worship without warrants.
Homan argues these restrictions eliminate the efficiency and safety of making arrests within county jails, forcing federal teams to conduct more dangerous neighborhood operations to apprehend individuals. He claims the surge fulfills a promise made to Hochul and is necessary because state policies prevent the arrest of criminals upon their release from custody.
Governor Hochul rejected the threat, asserting that President Donald Trump personally promised not to send agents without her request. While she maintains that New York will cooperate to remove dangerous criminals, she warned that the operation would turn neighborhoods into a campaign of fear and disrupt the city's economy. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the planned raids as cruel and inhumane, calling for the total abolition of ICE and pledging to defend the city's sanctuary status. The tension follows violent clashes between ICE agents and protesters at the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, New Jersey, and occurs as the city prepares for the NBA Finals and the World Cup.
