Trump Petitions Supreme Court to Resume White House Ballroom Build

President Donald Trump is seeking Supreme Court intervention to overturn a lower-court injunction blocking the construction of a $400 million White House ballroom and security complex.

The United States Supreme Court is weighing an emergency petition from the Trump administration to lift a lower-court blockade on the construction of a 90,000-square-foot ballroom in the White House East Wing. The $400 million project, which is approximately 65% complete, involved the demolition of a third of the historic East Wing to create a superstructure that the administration describes as a highly integrated military complex. This facility includes bomb shelters designed to withstand nuclear blasts, missile-resistant columns, and a drone port.

District Judge Richard Leon originally issued a preliminary injunction barring above-ground construction, ruling that the project lacked necessary congressional approval. This decision was upheld 2-1 by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, which sued to halt the project, argues the administration is attempting to outrun judicial review to create a fait accompli before legal challenges are resolved.

Representing the government, Solicitor General D. John Sauer and the Department of Justice contend the project is a national security necessity, citing a July 8 missile threat against Air Force One and previous assassination attempts. They argue the president has unimpeded authority to renovate the White House and that the security facilities are inextricably intertwined with the ballroom. While the administration claims the project is privately funded, congressional Democrats have alleged that funds from tax cuts are being used. A decision on the stay petition is expected by Friday.
