Bitcoin Miners Pivot to AI as Crypto Markets Rally
CleanSpark and other Bitcoin miners shifted toward AI computing as cryptocurrency prices rallied following Donald Trump's announced meeting with President Xi Jinping.
Bitcoin mining stocks rallied on Monday following news that Donald Trump announced an upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The move sparked optimism regarding a partial resolution to the U.S.-China trade war, reversing a risk-off trend that had previously erased $19 billion in cryptocurrency futures.
Amidst the market recovery, CleanSpark announced a strategic pivot toward artificial intelligence-focused projects and appointed Jeffrey Thomas as senior vice president of AI data centers. This shift toward high-performance computing reflects a broader trend among mining firms seeking new revenue streams after reduced rewards from last year's halving. To support this growth, CleanSpark secured a $100 million Bitcoin-backed credit line from Coinbase Prime.
Other industry players saw significant gains, with Canaan closing nearly 28% higher, while Riot Platforms and Cipher Mining rose 10% and 6% respectively. Institutional interest in the intersection of Bitcoin mining and AI compute was further evidenced by Google backstopping a deal involving Fluidstack and Cipher.
