US Treasury Yields Hit 20-Year Highs Amid Inflation Fears

US Treasury yields surged to levels not seen since 2007, driven by robust economic growth, rising oil prices, and expectations of further Federal Reserve rate hikes.

U.S. Treasury yields surged to their highest levels since the 2007 financial crisis in late September 2026, with the benchmark 10-year yield peaking above 5.2% and the 30-year yield hitting a 20-year high of approximately 5.5%. The sell-off was triggered by a combination of stronger-than-expected PMI data showing rapid business growth, a national debt exceeding $40 trillion, and rising energy costs linked to the war with Iran. Oil prices climbed above $100 per barrel following projectile strikes in the Strait of Hormuz and Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.

Kevin Warsh, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, oversaw a recent interest rate increase to a range of 3.75% to 4%. Federal Reserve officials, including Governor Michael Barr, signaled that further tightening is likely necessary to combat stubborn inflation, leading markets to price in a high probability of another rate hike in October. In response to the volatility, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expanded a $6 billion buyback program for long-term bonds and intervened in the yen market to prevent Japanese officials from selling Treasuries.

The surge in borrowing costs has pushed 30-year mortgage rates above 7% and created headwinds for equity markets, particularly for debt-laden corporations and high-growth tech stocks. While AI-driven investment has provided some offset to stock declines, analysts warn that the current environment mirrors the volatility of 2022. The trend extended globally, pushing government bond yields in Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom to multi-decade highs.
