James Talarico Challenges Ken Paxton to Debate Amid Video Controversy

Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico challenged Republican Ken Paxton to a public debate after a resurfaced video of Talarico criticizing capitalism sparked backlash.

Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico challenged Republican opponent and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to a public debate following a Fox News appearance where Paxton characterized Talarico as a socialist. Talarico claimed he agreed to three debates over a month ago, all of which Paxton declined.

The challenge follows the resurfacing of a 2020 video from a Sierra Club climate forum. In the recording, Talarico described capitalism, white supremacy, and climate change as "oppressive systems" that must be "dismantled" and compared the Texas oil and gas industry to the obsolete cassette tape market of the 1980s. Republican-aligned groups, including the Lone Star Liberty PAC and the Senate Leadership Fund, have amplified the footage.

Talarico's campaign now describes him as a "proud capitalist" and states that he "missed the mark" with the previous comments. The race is currently considered a toss-up, though Paxton trails Talarico in candidate-to-candidate fundraising and recent polls. Analysts suggest Paxton's legal history, including fraud charges and impeachment, has made national Republican donors hesitant to provide financial support.
