Trump Administration Closes U.S. Consulate in Winnipeg

The United States Department of State is closing its consulate in Winnipeg, Manitoba, as part of a broader initiative by the Donald Trump administration to streamline diplomatic operations. This move is part of a larger plan to close five smaller diplomatic posts worldwide to improve resource management. The State Department announced that the responsibilities of the Winnipeg office will shift to the U.S. embassy in Ottawa.

The closure occurs amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew over tariffs. Manitoba previously retaliated against U.S. trade policies by banning imports of U.S.-made alcohol. Kinew has previously characterized the president as "Enemy No. 1" in the context of the economy.

Obby Khan, leader of the Progressive Conservative opposition, criticized the move, suggesting it reflects Kinew's failure to manage cross-border trade. Kinew's office responded by clarifying that the consulate falls under federal jurisdiction, asserting that the province remains committed to maintaining its own trade office in Washington D.C.
