Andy Burnham Endorses Journalism Matters Campaign for Local News
Prime Minister Andy Burnham endorsed the Journalism Matters campaign, linking the survival of local journalism to the success of his government's devolution plans.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced his support for the annual Journalism Matters campaign, which runs from November 2 to 8, 2026. Coordinated by the News Media Association, the campaign frames journalism as a critical component of national infrastructure essential for democracy, community resilience, and accountability.
Burnham argued that independent reporting is vital as his government devolves more power from Westminster to local communities, stating that greater local power requires corresponding local accountability. He highlighted the role of trusted reporters in combating misinformation and separating fact from fiction during crises in Southport and Belfast.
Theo Bamber, chief executive of the News Media Association, welcomed the endorsement but urged the government to move beyond rhetoric. Bamber called for concrete action and protections for independent journalism against poor policy decisions and the influence of global technology companies to ensure publishers can continue uncovering the truth.
