Tech Giants Pledge to Offset AI Data Center Costs
Microsoft and Anthropic pledged to cover rising electricity costs as public opposition grows over the resource demands of large AI data centers.
Public opposition to large artificial intelligence data centers has intensified as residents face rising electricity costs and high water consumption. Residential electric prices in the United States have increased by more than 36% since 2020, though some studies indicate that data centers may actually lower costs for other consumers by paying a significant portion of utilities' fixed charges.
To mitigate this backlash, Microsoft and Anthropic have pledged to cover increased electric costs resulting from their AI centers. Other technology firms have joined this effort by signing the Ratepayer Protection Pledge established by President Donald Trump.
Companies are also implementing resource-saving measures to address environmental concerns. Amazon Web Services and Microsoft are utilizing recycled water to reduce fresh water demand. Microsoft previously attempted to reduce land-based resource strain and improve server reliability by experimenting with underwater data centers near Scotland's Orkney Islands, though those operations were suspended in 2024.
