African Democratic Congress Demands President Tinubu's Resignation Over Poverty Crisis

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has demanded the resignation of President Bola Tinubu, alleging that his economic policies have pushed 139 million Nigerians—approximately 60% of the population—below the national poverty line. Citing a World Bank report, the opposition party criticized the administration for prioritizing macroeconomic indicators and revenue generation over the survival of ordinary citizens. The ADC described reforms such as foreign exchange unification and the removal of petrol subsidies as ruinous, arguing that government palliatives are insufficient to address structural poverty.

Building on this demand, ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar criticized the administration's reliance on borrowing, taxation, and imports. Atiku highlighted that manufacturers spent 3.53 trillion naira on raw material imports over six months while national food inflation reached 17.52 percent. He argued that the current approach exports jobs and imports inflation, weakening the national currency.

To replace the current model, the ADC proposed an economic agenda centered on local production, manufacturing, and technology. Their plan includes restoring security to farming communities, rehabilitating 264 abandoned dams for irrigation, and establishing regional agricultural production belts to lower food prices and create employment.
