US Bars Palestinian Leaders While Granting Visas to Iran

The United States Department of State denied entry visas to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and dozens of his delegation members for the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. This marks the second consecutive year the U.S. has blocked Abbas from attending in person. Washington justified the sanctions by citing the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization's failure to meet peace commitments, their efforts to internationalize the conflict through the International Criminal Court and International Court of Justice, and the continued payment of stipends to convicted terrorists.

In response, the United Nations General Assembly voted 152-3 to allow President Abbas to address the gathering via video on September 24. The resolution also permits other high-level Palestinian officials to participate remotely for the next year if travel remains blocked. The Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned the U.S. move as an unjustified measure that violates the 1947 Headquarters Agreement.

Simultaneously, the U.S. approved visas for a core Iranian delegation, including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, despite an ongoing conflict between the two nations. While granting entry to fulfill host country obligations, the State Department imposed strict travel restrictions and a ban on purchasing luxury goods. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated these measures prevent regime elites from engaging in shopping sprees while ordinary Iranians suffer. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei rejected U.S. accusations as a flight from reality and an act of projection.
