Russia and Ukraine Exchange Massive Long-Range Drone and Missile Strikes

Russia and Ukraine launched coordinated long-range attacks on June 21-22, targeting energy infrastructure, missile factories, and civilian centers across both nations.

Russia and Ukraine engaged in a massive exchange of long-range drone and missile strikes between June 21 and June 23, 2026. Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian military targeted Russian defense infrastructure, including a critical semiconductor plant in Voronezh that produces electronics for Iskander and Kh-101 missiles, as well as the Dubna satellite communications center near Moscow. The Voronezh strike killed at least five people and injured dozens, with reports suggesting the use of Storm Shadow cruise missiles.

Simultaneously, Ukraine launched a barrage of over 300 drones, with 84 targeting Moscow, which caused temporary flight suspensions at four major airports. Russian forces retaliated with strikes across Ukraine, killing at least six civilians in the Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa regions. In Sumy, a drone strike destroyed a residential home, killing a man, his 13-year-old son, and a grandmother. Other Russian operations included over 50 attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region, damaging schools and gas stations.

The conflict extended to the Black Sea, where Russian drones struck the Panamanian-flagged vessel Victress, killing an Egyptian crew member. In Russian-annexed Crimea, Ukrainian strikes on energy infrastructure forced authorities in Sevastopol to cancel public events and suspend fuel sales. This fuel crisis spread to Siberia's Omsk region, where officials limited gasoline sales to prevent panic buying. On the ground, Russian forces reported tactical advances in the Kupyansk and Konstantinovka sectors, while Ukraine continued to scale up experimental drone technologies to counter Russian aerial assaults.
