State Department Blocks NYC Official's Meeting With Iranian Envoy
The U.S. State Department canceled a planned meeting between NYC International Affairs Commissioner Ana María Archila and Iranian UN representative Amir-Saeid Iravani.
The United States Department of State intervened to cancel a July 7, 2026, meeting between Ana María Archila, New York City's Commissioner for International Affairs, and Amir-Saeid Iravani, Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations. The meeting was scheduled for 2 United Nations Plaza during a period of high tension following Iranian missile attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz and the end of a temporary cease-fire declared by President Donald Trump.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio and State Department officials characterized the potential engagement as unconscionable, asserting that Iravani works to undermine U.S. interests. Following the cancellation, federal officials met with the city administration to clarify guidelines for acceptable diplomatic conduct. Republican City Council members further criticized the attempt, accusing Archila of breaching protocol to advance a socialist agenda.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani denied prior knowledge of the appointment, describing the incident as a scheduling snafu and claiming the request originated from the Iranian side. This marks the second time the Trump administration has halted New York City's international outreach, having previously blocked a June meeting between Mamdani and Colombian President Gustavo Petro.
