Trump Faces Base Backlash Over Costly Iran War

A Politico poll shows support among these voters dropped from 50 percent in May to 37 percent in July, while a Washington Post/IPSOS poll indicates 69 percent of all Americans oppose the conflict. Public disillusionment is tied to rising economic pressure, with average U.S. gas prices reaching $4.06 per gallon, and a death toll of 18 American military officers, including four killed this week following the collapse of a ceasefire.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth reported the war has cost taxpayers $37.5 billion and requested additional funding, with requests ranging from $67 billion to $88 billion. During a Senate hearing, Hegseth clashed with Senator Gary Peters, who accused the administration of lacking a long-term strategy to win. Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene also criticized Trump via social media, accusing him of bragging about U.S. soldier deaths.

Despite White House insiders describing the situation as "politically impossible" due to public opposition to further escalation, Trump maintains a strategy of extreme pressure. This includes naval blockades and airstrikes on maritime, drone, and nuclear-enrichment facilities in response to attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.
