Modi's 'Dimagi Naxal' Warning Sparks Political Clash and Social Media Movement
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's warning against intellectual Maoist sympathizers triggered a political standoff and the rapid rise of a satirical social media movement.
During his Independence Day address at the Red Fort, Narendra Modi warned the nation about dimagi naxals, describing them as intellectual supporters of Maoist ideology who attempt to brainwash youth and manipulate policies from within the system. He urged citizens to identify and isolate these individuals, claiming that while armed Naxals have been eliminated, these intellectual sympathizers remain a crisis.
The remarks triggered an immediate political backlash. Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram and Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal both claimed the label with pride, arguing that the term is used to stigmatize those who question the government. In response, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi accused the Indian National Congress of admitting to being a Dimagi Naxal Congress, asserting that Chidambaram's comments confirmed an ideological alignment with Naxalism.
Simultaneously, a satirical social media movement emerged. A group calling itself the Dimagi Naxal Party gained over 270,000 followers on Instagram and X within days, adopting the motto Think | Research | Resist. The movement faced early hurdles as its Instagram account reported a shadow ban and temporary suspension, leading the creators to change their handle to avoid restrictions. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju defended the Prime Minister, stating the terminology targets those who reject the Constitution rather than legitimate political opposition.
