Governor McMaster Appoints Darline Graham Nordone to U.S. Senate

Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham Nordone to the U.S. Senate following the sudden death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham.

Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina died unexpectedly on July 11, 2026, at age 71. A preliminary medical examiner's report attributed his death to an aortic dissection caused by cardiovascular disease. Graham passed away at George Washington University Hospital after emergency responders treated him for cardiac arrest at his Washington residence, shortly after he returned from a diplomatic visit to Kyiv to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

To fill the vacancy, Governor Henry McMaster appointed Graham's sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to serve as interim senator until January 3, 2027. The appointment, which made Nordone the first woman to represent South Carolina in the Senate, followed a public recommendation from President Donald Trump, who called the move a "fabulous tribute" to the late senator. Nordone was sworn in on July 14, 2026, pledging to support the president and continue her brother's legislative work.

Graham's death, combined with the ongoing hospitalization of Senator Mitch McConnell for pneumonia and injuries from a fall, reduced the Republican Senate majority to 51-47. This leadership void has complicated the GOP's legislative agenda, including the confirmation of Attorney General nominee Todd Blanche and the passage of a Russia sanctions bill.

Because Graham had already won the GOP nomination for a fifth term, South Carolina will hold a special Republican primary on August 11 to select a permanent nominee. Potential candidates include Representatives Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman. The eventual Republican winner will face Democratic nominee Annie Andrews in the November 3 general election.
