Yair Lapid Condemns Netanyahu Over Emerging US-Iran Peace Deal
Opposition leader Yair Lapid accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of strategic failure regarding a prospective US-Iran agreement that preserves Iran's nuclear and missile programs.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid condemned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a "shocking failure" regarding an emerging peace agreement and memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran. Lapid argues the deal fails to achieve any of Israel's war objectives, as it allows the Iranian regime to survive and rebuild its nuclear capabilities while leaving its ballistic missile program intact.
Lapid alleged that Netanyahu lost the trust of the U.S. administration by presenting overly optimistic scenarios and failing to coordinate a professional team for negotiations. He further criticized the Prime Minister for underestimating the economic impact of lifting sanctions on Iran and the security risks associated with the Strait of Hormuz. Lapid also noted that no security meetings have occurred between himself and Netanyahu since April, despite legal requirements for monthly updates.
The diplomatic tensions follow a cycle of hostilities that began on February 27, 2026, involving U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent Iranian retaliatory operations. In response to those assaults, Tehran shut down the Strait of Hormuz to adversaries, impacting global energy markets. Lapid previously characterized a unilateral ceasefire announced on April 8 as a political disaster that excluded Israel from critical security decisions.
