Senate Confirms Erica Schwartz as CDC Director

The United States Senate confirmed Erica Schwartz as the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Wednesday in a 51-44 vote. A retired rear admiral and former deputy surgeon general who recently served as an executive at UnitedHealth Group Inc., Schwartz is the first permanent leader of the agency in nearly a year. She follows a series of acting directors, including Jay Bhattacharya, after Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. fired previous director Susan Monarez last August.

Schwartz takes command of an agency facing severe instability, including a staff reduction of 25% to 33% due to layoffs and resignations. The CDC is currently managing concurrent outbreaks of Ebola in Africa and cyclosporiasis, measles, and hantavirus in the United States. The agency's Atlanta headquarters also recently experienced a shooting attributed to vaccine misinformation.

During her confirmation hearings, Schwartz affirmed her support for childhood vaccines and the Make America Healthy Again agenda. However, Senator Bill Cassidy questioned her ability to maintain autonomy from Secretary Kennedy, who has sought to rescind childhood vaccination recommendations. Cassidy pressed Schwartz on whether she would stand up to policies that undermine faith in immunization.
