Trump's Narco-Terrorism Campaign Kills Over 200 People

The U.S. military has killed at least 205 people in more than 60 strikes against suspected drug-trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific since September.

The Donald Trump administration has executed a lethal campaign against suspected drug-trafficking vessels in the Caribbean Sea and Eastern Pacific, resulting in at least 205 deaths since early September. President Trump has characterized the operations as an "armed conflict" against narco-terrorists, claiming the strikes destroy fentanyl shipments and save thousands of American lives. However, former narcotics officials and legal experts dispute these claims, noting that the targeted fast boats typically carry cocaine, while fentanyl is primarily trafficked overland from Mexico.

Under the direction of General Francis L. Donovan and the United States Southern Command, the military utilized MQ-9 Reaper drones and fixed-wing aircraft to conduct over 60 strikes. The operation, known as Operation Southern Spear, escalated in late May with four strikes in a single week, including attacks on May 26, 27, 29, 30, and June 1. These late-May operations killed at least 14 people. The campaign began off the coast of Venezuela and coincided with a January military invasion that removed President Nicolás Maduro from power.

Rights groups, including Amnesty International USA, have condemned the strikes as immoral extrajudicial killings, specifically citing reports that survivors of initial attacks were targeted and killed in follow-up strikes. Colombia's President Gustavo Petro has described the actions as murder and suspended intelligence sharing with the U.S. military. In response to these controversies, the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Defense has launched a self-initiated review to determine if the military adhered to the established Joint Targeting Cycle, though the review will not address the legality of the strikes.
