South Korea Creates Fund to Manage AI Wealth Windfall

President Lee Jae Myung established a Future Response Fund to manage massive tax revenues generated by semiconductor profit surges from AI infrastructure demand.

South Korea is experiencing a massive socio-economic shift as AI infrastructure demand drives unprecedented profits for semiconductor firms. Samsung Electronics reported a second-quarter operating profit of 89.5 trillion won ($63 billion), marking a year-on-year increase of over 1,800%, while SK Hynix saw a 557% increase during the same period. This wealth surge has intensified the social desirability of semiconductor engineers and triggered volatility in the KOSPI stock index, which doubled in value over the last year before dipping 22% in July.

In response to these developments, Lee Jae Myung described the AI era as "a truly new opportunity for Korea." He established a Future Response Fund designed to invest new tax revenues for the benefit of future generations. The South Korean government is currently debating how to equitably manage and steward these extraordinary excess profits to ensure long-term national stability.
