Global Markets Crash as AI Trade Unravels After Midterms

Global stock markets plummeted as investors feared Democratic midterm victories would lead to stricter AI regulations and moratoriums on data center construction.

Global technology stocks suffered a massive sell-off on November 6, 2026, erasing trillions of dollars in market value following a sweeping Democratic victory in the U.S. midterm elections. The Nasdaq Composite fell 5.5%, its deepest one-day drop since April 2025, while the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average also plunged. Investors fear that Democratic control of the House and Senate will lead to aggressive oversight of artificial intelligence and the imposition of construction moratoriums on data centers due to environmental and power grid concerns.

Donald Trump blamed the Democratic election results for the crash, while U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders called for a national moratorium on data center construction. In Texas, Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa pledged similar pauses. The rout heavily impacted the 'Magnificent Seven' and semiconductor firms; Nvidia Corporation dropped over 9% and AMD slumped more than 17%. UBS estimates that 30% of projected 2028 U.S. data center capacity expansion could be at risk.

The volatility spread rapidly to Asia, where the South Korean Kospi plunged nearly 9%, triggering a circuit breaker, and Japan's Nikkei 225 fell over 6%. Major chipmakers including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix saw double-digit losses. Analysts suggest the market is shifting from the promise of AI to the actual costs of infrastructure, while some view the event as the bursting of an AI technology bubble.
