IMF Warns AI Valuations Pose Global Financial Stability Risk

The International Monetary Fund warns that high AI valuations and debt could trigger a market correction with global financial consequences.

The International Monetary Fund warned that inflated valuations and rising debt within the artificial intelligence sector pose a significant risk to global financial stability. In its Global Financial Stability Report, the organization identified a potential AI share price correction as one of three primary risks to the global system, alongside cyber-attacks and increasing government borrowing costs.

The report highlights that hyperscaler firms, including Google, Meta, Oracle, and Amazon Web Services, are investing on a scale that may exceed what is necessary for successful AI implementation. The IMF suggests that the actual economic gains from these technologies may be smaller than current market expectations.

Financial instability could be amplified by high leverage among retail investors and hedge funds, as well as circular financing arrangements and concentrated exposures. Such factors could lead to forced selling and widespread spillovers. The IMF identified the United States and Asian markets as the most exposed regions, while the United Kingdom and the euro area may remain more insulated despite their investors' exposure to American assets.
