Supreme Court of India Issues Notices to Opposition Leaders
The Supreme Court of India issued notices to Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders following a protest march that entered court premises.
The Supreme Court of India issued notices on Thursday to Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. The judicial action follows the October 12 'Chalo Dilli – March for Democracy,' where thousands of supporters gathered in central Delhi to protest alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant stated that "Nobody can browbeat the judiciary," adding that the court is aware of statements made outside the courtroom. The court specifically intends to question Rahul Gandhi regarding the circumstances that allowed crowds to enter the Supreme Court premises during the demonstration.
While the court moved forward with notices for the individual political leaders, it declined to issue a notice regarding a request for contempt action against the Kerala unit of the Congress party.
