Republicans Campaign on SALT Tax Cuts for Midterms

Republicans are leveraging a raised state and local tax deduction cap to maintain congressional control in the November 3 midterm elections.

Republicans are campaigning on a series of tax cuts passed last year to retain control of the House and Senate in the November 3 midterm elections. A central point of contention is the increase of the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap, which rose to $40,400 for individuals earning $505,000 or less in 2026.

Mike Lawler, a Republican Representative from New York, has made this provision a cornerstone of his re-election campaign in the lower Hudson Valley. President Donald Trump championed these tax cuts, including a deduction for overtime pay, and referred to Lawler as "Mr. SALT." The United States Department of the Treasury reports that the SALT change resulted in an average tax cut of $2,700 for New Yorkers.

Democratic challenger Cait Conley has criticized the policy, arguing that the cap should not exist at all and highlighting accompanying cuts to Medicaid funding. The political impact of the tax cuts remains uncertain as voters weigh the benefits against offsetting economic pressures, including rising costs of goods linked to tariffs and a conflict with Iran.
