UK Government Pledges £210 Million for High Street Regeneration

The Government of the United Kingdom has pledged £210 million to regenerate high streets by converting boarded-up shops, pubs, and clubs into community hubs, cafes, and shared workspaces. The initiative redirects existing regeneration funds toward community-led schemes to combat the decline caused by the cost-of-living crisis, rising business costs, and the growth of online shopping.

The funding package includes a £125 million derelict buildings fund for councils to revamp vacant cinemas and shopping centres, £65 million to rescue businesses at risk of closure, and £20 million divided between high street rental auctions and support for co-operative ownership. This effort complements the existing £5.8 billion pride-in-place programme.

Andy Burnham stated the funding aims to restore pride and return power to local residents, noting that too many high streets have been left to hollow out. Rose Marley, Chief Executive of Co-operatives UK, described the support for mutuals as a game changer. The government intends to announce a comprehensive high streets strategy for England later this year.
