Trump Cuts $4 Billion in Israel Aid as El-Sayed Wins Senate Seat
President Donald Trump announced $4 billion in aid cuts to Israel following the historic election of Abdul El-Sayed as the first Muslim U.S. Senator.
President Donald Trump announced plans to cut approximately $4 billion in annual military aid to Israel by the end of the year, stating that the country does not need the funding. The announcement followed the historic election of Abdul El-Sayed, who became the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate after defeating Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan with 52.5% of the vote.
Senator-elect El-Sayed, a progressive and son of Egyptian immigrants, campaigned on ending U.S. subsidies and weapon sales to Israel. He welcomed the president's decision, arguing that the United States should not subsidize a foreign military that has used American funds and weapons to commit "awful things." El-Sayed emphasized the necessity of distinguishing between the Jewish people and the actions of the state of Israel.
Despite their alignment on aid cuts, the two men maintain a hostile relationship. Trump frequently attacked El-Sayed during the campaign, labeling him a "jihadist Muslim Brotherhood member" and suggesting he should pass through a metal detector to enter the U.S. Capitol. El-Sayed has described the president and vice president as "odious" in their personal behavior but stated he will work with any official to serve the people of Michigan.
