UK and Poland Rebuke Pete Hegseth Over NATO Comments

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth faced international condemnation after mocking NATO allies' combat contributions during the war in Afghanistan.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth sparked international backlash after mocking the contributions of NATO allies during the war in Afghanistan. Speaking to army recruits at the University of Tennessee on Saturday, Hegseth claimed that while 50 countries contributed to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), only "maybe five" contributed significantly, and eventually only "one or two" were involved in kinetic operations. He further joked that the ISAF patch stood for "I Saw Americans Fighting."

The Government of the United Kingdom and the Polish government issued formal rebukes on Monday. A spokesperson for the British Prime Minister stated it is "wrong to diminish" the role of allies, noting that more than 450 British personnel died in the conflict. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski challenged Hegseth's claims by citing the 44 Polish soldiers who died securing Ghazni province.

These remarks echo previous tensions with the Trump administration. President Donald Trump previously alleged that coalition troops avoided the front lines, though he later issued a public tribute to the bravery of British soldiers following pressure from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The current controversy arrives amid broader disputes regarding the leadership of Ukraine and Russian diesel imports.
