Ukraine's Third Army Corps Deploys Kamikaze Robots in Operation Vivaldi

The Third Army Corps of Ukraine executed Operation Vivaldi in the northern Donetsk Oblast, utilizing a new tactic of air-deploying kamikaze ground robots via heavy bomber drones known as Griffins. These systems delivered suicide ground drones more than 10 kilometers behind Russian lines to target command posts, logistics, and communication hubs before infantry advanced.

The operation successfully halted a Russian salient north of Lyman, preventing the encirclement of the Fortress Belt cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. Ukrainian forces liberated approximately 125 square kilometers of territory, including the settlements of Shandryholove, Derylove, and Drobysheve. The corps also used drones to lay a minefield 400 meters deep near Shandryholove over two nights, a task that would have taken human troops two weeks.

Reports indicate the operation caused over 3,000 Russian casualties and damaged the combat potential of Russia's 1st Guards Tank Army and the 20th and 25th Combined Arms Armies. While the offensive progressed, Russia escalated its aerial campaign with jet-powered Shahed drones. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted a $27 billion defense funding shortfall that complicates the production of interceptors for these high-speed drones, which have killed 288 people in early September.
