Trump Disputes DOJ Findings on Reflecting Pool Damage

The renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has evolved into a legal and political dispute over whether damage to the site resulted from vandalism or construction failure. Donald Trump initially claimed the project would cost $1.5 million and take one week, but work remains ongoing fifteen weeks after the April announcement, with over $16 million in contracts awarded to firms including Atlantic Industrial Coatings and Green Water Solutions.

Trump and National Park Service officials originally attributed resurfacing failures and algae blooms to vandals using knives and razors, leading to the arrest of former Olympian David Hearn and others. However, the United States Department of Justice moved to dismiss these charges on July 31. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated that evidence from the Department of the Interior indicates the damage was caused by a botched contractor installation and a rushed timeline to meet the American 250 celebration.

Trump has rejected these findings and criticized Pirro for dropping the charges. Simultaneously, The Cultural Landscape Foundation is suing the Department of the Interior for violating federal historic preservation laws. The foundation requested a federal judge allow experts to inspect the pool to determine if the blue synthetic liner was destroyed by vandals or flawed installation, but Judge Nichols denied that request on August 4.
