Trump Ousts 199,000 Federal Workers in Seven Months
President Donald Trump has removed nearly 10 percent of the federal workforce through buyouts and layoffs, with cuts projected to reach 300,000 by year-end.
Donald Trump has forced out more than 199,000 federal employees within the first seven months of his term. According to an analysis by the Partnership for Public Service, the administration has removed nearly 10 percent of the federal workforce since January and projects total cuts of up to 300,000 by the end of the year.
Approximately two-thirds of these departures resulted from a buyout program called the Fork in the Road deal. This initiative offered benefits to employees who faced potential furloughs in exchange for their immediate resignation. The Department of Defense experienced the steepest losses with over 55,000 employees removed, followed by the Treasury Department with more than 30,000 and the Department of Agriculture with over 21,000.
These reductions have caused the closure of Social Security Administration offices and reduced service capacity at the Internal Revenue Service and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Max Stier, president and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service, described the workforce reductions as the arson of the government, stating that the services Americans expect will not be there.
